N73 just updated, not so happy

Ok, so I did the update and it only took about 35 mins. Shorter than I had anticipated. Did the backup of all my stuff and was able to restore it perfectly. The first thing I noticed was my signal strength was about 2-3 bars higher than where it used to be in the same position. Ill have to do more testing but so far the update seems to provide better reception.

However, some of my downloaded apps are no longer supported for reinstallation. The tetris type game I can live without, its the autolock program I need. Very upset that I cant have this program work with the phone anymore. I liked not having to set it everytime I put it in my pocket or case. Just a simple update and now even less applications work with the phone, this stinks.
 
Updating the FW should have zero effect on programs you've previously run. Make sure under your settings you shut .sis certificates off. That might be the problem. Even though you back up everything to the MC it doesnt all re-install for some reason. Check your app manager to see if they still appear there. If they do, delete them, verify your .sis files no longer do the certification check, and re-install. I've upgraded every v3 I've owned (4total) and have always been able to run the same programs after an update. Your in good shape w/ your FW...just check those thing out.

i hard reset, update f/w, hard reset again, then start loading up all my previous apps and info

i'm just anal like that lol
 
lol..same here...upon a suggestion from Olly I always have a seperate folder named sis files & keep them stored in there at all times. I think the issue he's having is that he's either got the certificate set to on, or a portion of the old program files still resides. Within the app manager and they need to be deleted and a fresh install is needed.
 
Ok, not sure exactly where to look for this certificates set to on/off thing. Under security settings I found a place for certif. management but it lists about 20 certificates and each one can be changed to on or off.

Also, I noticed that when I look at my inbox(or any box for that matter) the font is much larger. Whereas I used to be able to see about 15 texts on display, I now see 4. Its really annoying when trying to scroll down to find the one you sent about 40 texts ago.

Another thing I still see is everytime I reboot my phone, it tells me I have a voicemail when I clearly dont have one. This was happening during both versions of SW.
 
I'm skeptical to do this update, specifically going back to the ME firmware. I had it and noticed that my phone ran ALOT slower, which is not ok. I barely tolerate the sluggishness of my E62, much less on my N73.

I agree with what's been mentioned before. You should be backing your contacts/calendar up on Outlook anyways, so whenever I do a firmware update, I totally format everything, start as if I had just pulled the phone out of the box. The easiest thing to do is format the Memory card before you do the update, then after the update, do a hard reset and re-format the card. Then put the card in a card reader and just toss all the .sis files you want installed on there and open up the file browser and go one by one. It keeps your phone less messy that way. Takes me about an hour extra to get all the settings right and all that but it's totally worth it.
 
Maybe Im not understanding what a hard reset is. I do back up everything in outlook anyway so if I lose any contacts I just resync.

Ok, Just made a new folder and downloaded the files I wanted to install there and it worked fine. Funny how the "install applications" didnt like the files in my old folder.
 
the trick is to format your memory card BEFORE the update. This way when you put it back in afterwards, it doesnt' try to reinstall your crap. So here's the breakdown:

1. backup what you want (NOT with the built-in backup; synch with outlook, make sure you have the .sis files in a folder on your PC somewhere, any pictures/videos you want)
2. with the memory card in the phone, go to tools, memory, options, format
3. pull the memory card out of the phone
4. do the update
5. hard reset after the update (*#7370#)
6. put the memory card back in the phone, repeat step 2
7. either start installing from the pc, or...
8. connect the phone to the pc via cable and select "mass storage mode"
9. go to the root of the memory card and drag and drop all your .sis files there
10. disconnect the phone and use the phone's file browser to browse to the root of the memory card and just start going down the list, installing each app one by one.
 
OK, realized that when the update was done, the phone reset the folder settings to Two-line viewing. Set it back to One-line and its all small fonts again.
