Mystery Transmission Problem in 2001 Honda Accord?

It's an automatic, V4. If I put it in reverse and press the gas right away, the car goes backwards without an issue. But if I put it in reverse, then let it sit and idle for a few seconds, once I press the gas there is little to no movement. The RPMs go up as the engine revs, but the car doesn't have any power. To correct it, I just put the car back in park, then back to reverse and hit the gas quickly, without letting it idle in reverse.
Does anyone know what this might be? How can I diagnose this? I called a transmission shop and they said it's an unusual problem they weren't familiar with. But I don't want to get ripped off paying for something I don't need. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the fluid level first of all (with the car hot idling in park) if it is full you can have it put on a computer and it can diagnose the problem but so few transmission shop are truly honest if it is an overdrive plan on spending 1200 about 700 if it is not overdrive it is a strange problem I've never heard of it.
