A few days ago, I had a head-on crash with another biker. My speed was about 12 MPH, while the other guy was moving faster. I was wearing a backpack, and fell, I think, twisting more or less backward. Luckily I walked out of the ER a few hours after the crash with a deep forearm contusion and a bunch of other bruises and scrapes.

However the next day, I got up and tried to stretch a bit. When I stood up and pulled my shoulders straight back, I felt a sharp, grinding sensation in the upper spine area, perhaps where the thoracic and cervical vertebrae come together, or maybe just below. It's hard to tell exactly where the pain comes from, if it's from the vertebrae, a rib, the scapula or a combination. While I have a little dull, intermittent pain at other times, it's most acute when I stand straight up and pull my shoulders back. Nothing hurts to the touch or by putting pressure on an area, nor have there been any other evident symptoms. I can move normally without the sharp grinding pain although I'm very tentative when I do anything because I don't really know what the root of the pain is. It's hard to explain it, so the web hasn't been much good so far because I can't think of succinct, descriptive terms to search under. I don't know if I'm dealing with a break, a chip, a sprain, a strain or if it's a rib, in the spine or something else.

I feel hesitant to move quickly, my neck/upper back just feels off, like something might break, tear or crack if I move the wrong way or move too fast. It doesn't feel like any muscle or ligament tear or strain I've ever had, which is why I'm afraid of leaving it to see if it heals on its own. On the other hand, I don't have medical insurance and while I'm assuming I will have to go to a doctor no matter what, I guess I'm trying to get a feel for what I might be in for.
