My ZOOM G2 effects pedal will not function?

I recently recieved a (used) ZOOM G2 effects pedal and it will not work. We plugged the lead from the guitar into the input jack labelled INPUT and the lead from the amplifier into the input labelled OUTPUT(PHONES). I turn on the pedal, turn on the amplifier, strum a chord on the guitar and.....nothing happens. I'm pretty sure i'm doing everything right but just in case, can someone tell me what's wrong? This is basically the setup: Guitar->Pedal->Amplifier
