Not every bite tasted bad and I ended up eating the whole thing and now I think maybe I shouldn't have. I think I might throw the rest of the bag out. (they're frozen, and I just fried up a thawed one).

When fish is bad, it smells like ammonia. It is unmistakable when you are cooking it.

Try another one first. That is to expensive to throw out without trying or smelling it after it is thawed. I don't believe mercury is detectable by taste. It had to be something else.

tilapia is a very mild fish.....i just had some last week off my grill.....i don't know why you would have tasted chemicals but i agree that i would throw the rest out......tilapia should taste very clean and mild

Tilapia is very low in mercury. It's even safe for pregnant women. It could be something with the way your bag was treated, or you could have had bad oil. It could be something as simple as not rinsing your cookware well enough. Either way, I would throw out the bag just in case.

Most likely your tilapia was farm raised... I believe mercury is a concern for wild caught saltwater fish.
