So I had a double injury to my si joint late year. I was brushed off at various hospitals and went to a chiropractor. I've been under the care of one for the past six months. I have made amazing progress, not there yet though. About an inch to go as opposed to the amazing three inches it was before. I hope that he is able to put it all together and it takes.I plan to do PT after it's somewhat stablized and then get prolo.

Yeap, that's my plan. I hope it all works out. But if it doesn't what is the alternative? What if he can't get it to stay in? What if the prolo doesn't work?

Will my body ever feel like it did before this happened?

Am I doomed to this for the rest of my life?

Where are all the amazing recovery stories about back injuries?

Where is the hope?

This has been the worst experiance of my life. I have been laying here for the last six months crying my eyes out.

Everything is so up in the air, and what if I do come out of it, what then? What's on the other side? More fear, fear that I go threw this again? Fear that I won't be able to be the person I was before. Afraid to have wild crazy sex or afraid to go out on a boat, or afraid of everything. All I have been reduced to is pain, anxiety, fear and a back injury. I have been robbed of my peace.

Sorry. Like I said thoughts.

Any advice?

So so sorry that you are experiencing this problem...I think the SI joint is the most under diagnosed problem there is...usually takes years and years and years to find out what the problem is....seriously.. I was about 6 1/2 yrs. before diagnosis. Ok...if what you are doing is working...that is good....BUT if it is not...well...I can tell you that I have had the OLD Surgery for SI joint and the new Surgery for SI joint because I didn't fuse....I am the first revision for my Dr...and anyone else!!!! It is fusing!!!! The first surgery was not pretty....yikes...can't tell you it was not good....hard recovery...but you do what you gotta do... The second surgery removed the old hardware...and let me kid you not...I have the hardware...made a little robot out of it..framed!! OK the second surgery, if it had been my first would have been pretty much a piece of cake compared to the first......seriously...they insert the roRAB from the side...and you fuse.... Not nearly as hard....the recovery is basically the same...you need to lay in bed....chair for 3 months...no walking.... I used a walker...and my husband bought me a scooter after the second surgery...it made life much easier... BUT look at me now...6 months out...walking..no movement...the leg doesn't hurt...the little toe is happy - I do have a min. amount of pain in the original surgery area...hey fusing is hard work...but I am getting better and getting on with my life... I was basically down to 40% of life...now I am at 70%...and moving up...that is good news... I am living....and I am getting happier... If you need the names of Drs. for this surgery...and it is a new one...let me know... (look up SI Bone) I hope you are doing well/feeling better....but realize that there are other treatments...may not make you happy to start...but it's the end that counts... Life is not always what we want...it is what we do with what we have...and I am doin .... Good luck...happy thoughts.... Sage

Caligirl...I am so happy that you have found a method to help your SI joint pain. Keep feeling well...

Thanks. That helps A LOT. 6 1/2 years is a long time to lose. Why did it take them that long?

I guess the reason why I got helped so quickly was because it was so hard to deny my problem based on my x-ray.

Thank you Sage. I have followed your saga on the board and my heart surely goes out to you for all you have been through. Hopefully, this surgery will be the answer. Take care. Lisa.

6 1/2 yrs. for SI joint problem is actually a short time, from what I was told...
I had every test known to mankind...mri, ct scan, xray, oh and they tried all of the usless stuff...cause I have other lower back problems,,,but they thought that I was in too much pain for them.....duh.... (nerve ablation, injections by the dozen, medications and on and on...) I had taken a bad fall in a kitchen...threw a disc out of where it was supposed to be in my cervical spine and into the canal with the nerve....far lateral is the term....and it took 13 months of agony for them to figure out what that problem was.... At the same time as the fall, I disrupted my SI joint... It hasn't been a fun decade. But I am determined I will be the best that I can be... I just didn't give up...kept going to the DRs....I didn't accept...it may be in my head...anxiety....my Fibromyalgia...or any other foolishness they came up with..I knew there was a problem. Actually, I found my Dr. right here on this board....2 1/2 yrs. ago, after a neurosurgeon said he thought I had SI joint problem, but he didn't fix those... Another meraber of the board recommended a Dr. about 60 miles away....these specialists are far and few between...and you really need a good one... Mine is one of the best!!! Feel free to ask any question......it is difficult because there are so few of us with SI problems... Take care....feel better..

I went a different route w/management of severe SI joint pain. I had several radio-frequency nerve ablations. This is where they use heating, cooling or a corabo of the two to basically prevent the nerve from sending a pain signal to the brain. It does not "solve" the problem (as surgery may) but it kills the messenger. I had this procedure done 3 times in 4-5 years. I got about one year of relief from each of the first 2 procedures. I had the third procedure done in April, 2009, and am not in need of another at this time. However, after I got pain relief from each procedure I also got involved in some aggressive manual physical therapy. I think that this has been a key component of my recovery. Large pain-management centers or those affiliated w/teaching hospitals do this pain-management procedure (RFA). It is much less risky than surgery and there is minimal recovery. I did not find chiropractors helpful. I saw 3 of them at various points and eventually threw in the towel and concluded I was wasting my time and money. In order to recover from an SI joint injury, the corresponding muscles that get pulled into the pain syndrome must be addressed. Just my personal experience. Hope this helps.

Thanks Cali.....so far....I am at the best level I have been at for almost 8 yrs....coming along...hopefully...it will all be ok!!!! Time is what is needed...fusing is like water drip...slow........slow....slow..!!!! Take care...

Hi Sage,

I have a quick question. How did you find the doctor to do the SI surgery? All of the docs in my area say that they do not operate. I have been dealing with SI issues for many years, as well as a disc bulge and hip bursitis. I have had more injections than I think are even legally allowed with no result, the RFA and PT...all treatments had no impact on the amount of pain I have on a daily basis. Some days if I sit on the floor I cannot get up. I can only walk, sit, stand or lay down for a minimal amount of time. I am very frustrated and could use some advice from someone who has dealt with this issue and has results. Many thanks.

oh Tara, I really do understand what you are going through. It is not pleasant to put it nicely. OK...I was very fortunate in finding my SI joint surgeon....a Health Board meraber mentioned one about 70 miles from my house... I am very very fortunate....these Doctors are soooooo specialized...and right now there is a new method for doing the surgery...which if you are thinking of surgery is the way to go......seriously...I have had both types of surgeries...and the new way is the one you want. the recovery is still very difficult because you can't bear weight for 3 months...at least. BUT, if my experience is anything to go by, I am finally healing - fusing. Feeling better and better.... Look up SI Bone and there is an area where you can contact them to find out if there is a doctor in your area who is trained in the new method. Let me know how you make out....I really do understand your problems...
