My sony vaio laptop does not turn on?

My laptop does not want to turn on. I would like to know what the problem is. I think that the problem is the power adapter, but I am not sure. My power adapter has a light and it turns on when I plug the adapter to the wall, but when i plug the power adapter to my laptop the power light in my computer does not turn on.

Could the problem be the power adapter?
