My Sony Ericsson W810i won't show message alerts?

Hi. When I get a message on my W810i, the alert won't pop up. I see the envelope on the top of the screen but I have to go to my message inbox to look at my message. I've gone into Settings>New Events and it was on Activity Menu which it has been on since I got the phone (more than 2 years ago).
How can the message alerts start coming up again?
Please help!
