My 15 year old son opens cans of food such as Corn beef hash, soups, Pasta's etc etc.... and uses half and sets the can in the refrigerator with a peice of saran wrap. I say leftover food should be stored out of the can in airtight containers. Who is right?

what they use to call a tin can isn't anymore its a steel or aluminum can,and its coated inside with a plastic so the food dosent come in contact with the metal container,of course if you scratch the coating then contact is probable, but to get sick is u8nlikely ,unless the container is in the ref for a long time, ever cook in cast iron skillets,or aluminum pans?

You need to not "debate" with your son you are the mother and your word should be gold!!! I have a 17 Year old step son so i know it's not that easy. on things like this just trow it away and don't buy it as often. then when you do bring it in to the home it will be used all at once.

You. The food would preserve better if put in an airtight container. It could also become contaminated if left in the can.

Yes it should be stored in a tupperware container or something like it! Not only can it go bad otherwise, it's also better organization for your refrigerator! Better than a bunch of cans sitting around with messy saran wrap

You are.
Once the inside of the can is exposed to oxygen (by being punctured or opened) the metal begins to oxidize and can change the flavour of the food, making it taste metallic.

Without reading ??? further, I say Mom is always right, no matter if she's wrong or what!!
Buuuuuuuuuut,

Never leave food in a can or never leave spoons in food in the fridge. Causes food poisoning. I am chef too for 38 years. I've also had food poisoning (not from that) & it is NO fun.

Storing food in a can can cause lock jaw, it's pretty dangerous. You should NEVER leave food in a can, EVER!

Don't let him win this one, look it up. Storing food in a can is very dangerous.

Son listen to your mother! they should not be stored in tins as the moisture can and will rust the tins!thus contaminating the foods, plus bacteria thrive in the ridges of the tin once opened.
