Saw this last night, terific film. My question to people who have seen it though is.
Was Alec Baldwin's character (the lawyer) pretending to have an iron lung as he was ashamed of being epileptic?. I get the fact he took on the girls case because he knew what it was like to not have control over his own body?, but i wondered if the iron lung thing was a cover?.

I didn't like this film at all. The best thing that can be said about it is that it had a more sensible and realistic ending than the book. None of the characters were particularly sympathetic and I despised the Cameron Diaz character although I actually thought he performance was very good, it wasn't her fault that the character was so objectionable. The best thing about the film was the dog.

That said, I don't remember him mentioning an iron lung to the transplant girl.

I really enjoyed this film a lot more than I thought I would. I
Expected to Like it, but it was much better than I anticipated. Very heartbreaking, no I didn't like the mother either but that was the point, I don't think we were meant to like her but I could understand her on some level. I've just bought the book so will give that a read.

I liked this film. Saw it at the start of the year. I remember seeing 4 promos every break of every tv show i watched back when it was released around this time last year.

Gonna watch it again actually as the movie channels have picked it up recently.

In the book Campbell (or Alex Baldwin in the movie) uses a range of different explanations and jokes when asked why he has a service dog such as that he has an iron lung or he has SARS (the dog tallies the number of people he infects) or he was an recovering alcoholic (the dog gets between him and the beer). I think I remember him saying in the book he hadn't told anyone, not even his parents, that he had epilepsy so yeah in reference to things like the iron lung, he was just making it up i guess as he was ashamed to having epilepsy/not having control of his body.
I'm not entirely sure though but hope that helps a bit :)

On a side note, I too really liked the movie and even though I preferred the book and was annoyed by things that were changed or left out in the movie, I was able to separate the book from the movie when watching and so enjoyed it.
