my renault clio makes a loud whining sound in top gear. No probs with engine or

exhaust. What can it be? My (Manual 5-Speed) Renault Clio is 16 years old - 100K miles. New MOT. Today it made loud and sudden 'whining' sound at 60 mph. Then in 4th and 5th gear a steady whine when gear engaged. Nothing to see or smell. Recently passed MOT. Is the fault with the clutch / gearbox?
