About six months ago we had to get our 14 year old Lab put down, he was totally toilet trained, but as he got older he started to pee in our lounge (an old age thing, not his fault, he didn't generally go into this room, unless it was to pee). We recently got a new lab puppy, he is ~11 weeks, and again totally toilet trained (except for 'excitement' accidents'), but he has started to pee in the same room when we aren't watching. I know that this is because he is 'marking' the same area, but how do we stop this? We usually keep him out of this room, but sometimes he get into the room without us noticing, and ALWAYS pees. It isn't in the same place everytime, and we can tell he knows its wrong when we punish him, but it appears that he can't help it. What do we treat the room with to get rid of the 'smell' (there isn't a smell that we can notice, but our puppy obviously can) of our old dog?

labs r beautiful mine just turn 2 last month

well, to be sure go to your local vet and check up with ur dogs behaviour... as for getting rid of the smell, you need to know what to put onto the surface of the pee. Vingegar helps for carpet, but as for other surfaces, you need to check it up.
hope it helps good luck

I don't know if you will ever truly get rid of the scent with cleaning products, if you can afford to, can you replace the carpet ?? I think that's your only answer !!

It may not necessarily be a marking behaviour - very often pups will pee in a strange room because they haven't learned yet that it is all part of their 'den'. Keep the door shut firmly, or put a childgate on it until your puppy is completely housetrained - then you can introduce him to that room whilst you are present.

At 11 weeks your pup is very young to be completely housetrained - congratulations on teaching him so well so fast - but don't be upset by occasional accidents or excitement pees - these will happen until he is at least four months old, possibly even six months - and it's just bladder maturity catching up.

The best thing for cleaning carpets is a proper pet accident odour and stain remover - in my experience you get what you pay for - so buy the best cleaner you can - and do the whole carpet with it. I prefer the ones that you spray, then scrub, then spray and leave for up to an hour, as this gives the odour remover a chance to absorb into the carpet pile.

Finally, don't punish your pup for peeing in the wrong place - the last thing you want is a dog who won't pee in front of you - but runs off to do so whenever you go out for a walk! Just a firm 'no' - then move him outside, and praise when he does it in the appropriate place.

Good luck - it actually sounds like you're doing very well with him.

I feel for ya'll! There are certain sprays that you can buy at pet stores. I know they are specified and should help and they are probably 100% guarenteed. Good luck!

If you find the answer I would love to know. And cats too!!!!

I do know disinfectant just makes it worst as, apparently, it smells the same

make sure the area where the first dog peed is cleaned up completely...the younger dog is prob just smelling it and then marking it for its own
