games. What's the deal? It was a slow degrade, not a sudden one. Is it the reader or the fact that they're DVDs instead of CDs or what?

It's just getting old, hardware doesn't last forever it can become stressed and deteriorate. My PS2 (generation 2, about as old as it gets) will play PS2 games fine (unless they're blue backed) but it will take upwards of 45 minutes to load a PS1 game. It still works with all games some just take a super long time.

Try running one of those CD lens cleaners in your PS2. Mine stopped running blue discs until I did that.

I suggest catching the hell up with the rest of world with PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

your laser is out of focus (its called v9 syndrome). you can fix it yourself if you dont feel like risking it with some asian guy in a corner market for $50 bucks.

good luck if you go for it

In my humble opinion........
I say that PS 1's discs are low tech and PS2's are more complex than PS1.
