My Playstation 3 will not connect to the internet with broadband? Please help!?

I am pretty sure the modem actually reads the ethernet cable but every single time is says that the attempt to obtaim the IP address has timed out. I am also setting it to Automatic to find most of the settings. What is the problem here? What do I need to do?
