my palm tree is dying!!!!?

I got a palm tree about 3 months ago from a friend, they've had it for about 25 years. Since I've had it, its been dying, I re-potted it, in the same pot just different soil. Since its been inside the leaves started turning brown and dying, then falling off. Now the stalk is soggy and the top is VERY droopy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm going to be really sad if I lose this palm, it means a lot to me.
