my new windows 7 laptop is not finding bluetooth devices. does anyone know why?

i have just got a new laptop for christmas.

when i try to add a device it searches and even though my blackberry is discoverable it does not find it or any other phones in the house

is there something i need to do to set up the bluetooth or any other reason why it may not be working.
