My new cat completely ignores and has no desire to play with established cat. Why?

I adopted my first cat, fatty, over a year ago from a shelter. He's very playful and after a good while together, I decided to adopt another kitty for him to befriend. My boyfriend and I work all day and we live in an apartment and I thought this new addition would be better for him during the day.

Anyways, the new cat is very, very sweet to her us, her owners, and likes to play with her humans but absolutely NOT with our old cat. Old cat follows her around, sniffs her, licks her and she completely ignores him or hisses...and then comes like a sweet girl to my lap.

I feel bad having new cat want my attention and watching old cat stare at new cat, waiting for her to acknowledge him and play.

We've been together two weeks and honestly, I don't like new cat very much anymore because of this.

I'm considering surrendering her to the shelter and going through one of the shelter's petshop centers to get another cat. Those places provide cat personality descriptions, which is how I picked my first kitty.

Any thoughts?
