If your mother in law is going to take care of your dog again, put the dog ina crate and call a taxi to take you and the dog to her home. Explain to her with emphasis that this is very important to you. If she refuses to honor your request to crate your dog, find a boarding kennel or someone else to watch the dog in the future. Don't let one woman's carelessness and thoughtlessness ruin your peace of mind or bring harm to your dog.

Seattle. Is there a law? I am so worried about my dog but she thinks she knows everything. She will not listen to me. Is there some sort of law ?

no i don't believe there is a law stating that a dog being moved by car needs to be placed in a crate. there is a law stating that a dog or any other animal for that fact can not be in the drivers seat while in the car is in motion

there isn't a law for it, but if you don't like it don't let her do it. it's your dog. ask her to use a doggie seat belt. the dog still gets to see. my dog hates riding in a crate and whines the whole time. someone wrote about a cat being a crate... why do they have to? our kitten just falls asleep in the front seat. but if it's a law i want to know!

Dogs are fine without a crate- Cats are a whole other story. There isn't a law, your dog will probably be more comfortable being able to just chill in the back. I really wouldn't worry- I take my dog on trips all the time (LONG ones) and I've never put her in a crate.
