My mother-in-law is sabotaging my marriage!?

Ever since she met me, she hated me. She never explicitly said why, but she comes up with rediculous little excuses as to why I'm a horrible person. Just recently, my husband felt like he wanted to end our relationship (for other reasons) and that was exactly what his mother wanted. She said a lot of bad things about me to my husband and my husband took it all in and wouldn't stand up for me. So I called her myself to try and resolve things, but she turned all my words around and put words into my mouth etc. (said I called her a homewrecker and unfit mother etc. which is so untrue.) I asked my husband to stand up to her and tell her not to talk to me, but I don't think he did, instead he got another dose of bad talk about me. My husband and I are trying to work on our relationship to stay together, but with a mother-in-law like this, it is clear that he chooses his mother over me. What should I do?

Oh and we're supposed to make a trip (she lives several states away) to see her next month....who should go? all of us? him?
we are currently attending marital counseling sessions

and we have two little girls
