My Microsoft Wireless Mouse isn't working...how do I fix it?

I replaced the batteries, and pressed the 'connect' button on the device that goes into the computer and the 'connect' button on the bottom of the mouse. The red light is showing on the bottom of the mouse, but the device that goes into the computer isn't lighting up green like it usually does. Am I doing something wrong?
 
I have a microsoft wireless mouse and I quit connecting to the computer about a year ago. The light on the mouse still lights up and everything looks like it works, it just refuses to work.
