My Mazda Stinks!!! Why?

Hi all,

I have a 1996 Mazda 323 1.8, there was a smell of petrol coming into the car when stopped at traffic lights, junctions or just idling. I had a new cat fitted last month but it doesnt seem to have helped at all!!

Im running out of ideas as to what to do now......sort it or make use of the new scrappage scheme lol

I own a Mazda Six and had the same problem. I eventually fixed the problem very cheaply by replacing the car itself for motorised wheelbarrow. God bless x

New cat won't do anything about the smell of petrol. That is an exhaust pipe component.
You have either got a leak in the fuel pipes or the tank ventilator pipe has come adrift at the tank end and allowing fumes into the car.

Get someone to thoroughly check the fuel pipes from the tank to the filter and then to the injectors.
Check the petrol pump (or pumps if you have two - one probably in the tank and an external high pressure one).
Check that the filler neck isn't cracked between the tank cap and the tank itself.
Check the tank vent pipe for security (sometimes they come off).
Check the excess-fuel-return pipe from the engine room back to the tank.

It's a pain in the pinny to find a fault like this but should not be expensive to fix once you've discovered it. The scappage scheme is so bound up with terms and conditions at most dealers that it's probably not worth bothering with, especially as you've just forked out for an expensive cat.

So there is nothing mehcanically wrong with the car?
No check engine light?
Still drives okay?

Then just forget about it. You do not need to get rid of it and it is worth keeping. The Mazda 323 lasts a very long time.

And also, topping of the petrol tank with more petrol after the tank is filled causes it to smell inside the car and causes leaks because once the petrol pump stops pumping gas, you are harming the car by trying to add a few more drops of petrol in.
