My Mazda b2000 has no points. Why and when did they do this?

I thought the problem was I had a vapor lock and since I know nothing about the truck I replaced the plugs and the distributor cap and the rotor but I could not find any reference to points and condenser. Is there more maintenence to do? What year (S) did they get away from points and why?
