My Mac laptop won't turn on?

My Mac laptop was running rather slowly today so I just decided to turn it off. 3 hours later, I decided to try to get back on it again. It did the little "chime" and it got to the white screen with the apple and the revolving circle but it won't get past that.

Can somebody please help? Thank you!
