My local news station performs test on tvs to determine if ready for switch...

...to dtv on 6/12. How is this done? They do this from their television broadcast station, I believe. They don't come into the house and do it without your permission. They then run a script telling you whether you are prepared are not. How is this done?
 
Agrees with Tyler: "They are sending an analog signal that says something like. "If you are seeing this you failed the test" and a digital signal that says. "you passed'. This just displays on your tv for your own benefit. The station has no way of knowing if your tv passed or failed. Your tv only receives information, it doesn't send it."

Also, the station has the option to send different signals to the analog transmitter than what they send to the digital one. Therefore this test message is not sent out over the digital transmitter.
