My kids whine and cry whenever my wife is around. Why?

My wife is a great mom. I am stumped. She seems to be doing everything I do with the kids. But whenever I have the kids alone they never whine and cry. As soon as my wife walks in the door the whining starts. It isn't like this all the time but often. I was trying to figure out how the relationship is different between moms, dads and kids. Any ideas?
She doesn't hit them when I am not around. Weird idea. Whining means abuse? Yikes
