when i unplug the coil wire and hold it a half an inch from the coil the jeep runs perfect. once you plug the coil wire all the way in it does not run at all whats wrong???

Well, if you're running an old 6-volt jeep, and it has a 12-volt coil in it, it might be teh cause. You don't identify your Jeep, so it's hard to tell what the problem is. You should ALWAYS identify your vehicle by Make, Model, year, and condition/mileage. Since you didn't, you won't get a very satifactory answer off of here, because we don't know what you have. You don't say whether the coil has been replaced, looks stock or aftermarket, etc. Try the question again, except give more info on the vehicle, condition, if it's always had this coil, if you just bought the vehicle, etc.

for a coil to get too much power is not likely. electricity is lazy it only does as much as it has to. if you are getting power to the center of the cap but it stops there, then replace the cap and rotor. but it looks like the coil it self might be the problem.
