My 1999 Jeep Cherokee was parked, and suddenly, on its own, it started making a cyclic metallic clunking noise. It originated from somewhere under the hood, occurred about every 10 seconds, and started while it was parked and had not been driven for 24 hours. When I noticed it and tried to start it it was totally dead and the 2 month old battery was fried. Upon replacing the battery it seems to run and start fine. It has no auto start, alarm, etc. Any clues?
It was making this noise while NOT RUNNING, no key in the ignition, nothing...

Your battery was most likely hooked up in a wrong matter. It couldve malfunctioned from the electric shortage, hence frying the battery. You're lucky it didn't explode or cause leaks.

it sounds like a short happened. that doesent explain the clunking unless that short was was touching another shorted wire and that was activating something. check fuses and see if any are blown
