My jeep hood wont latch, can someone help me?

so in order to get the latch open at all i had to hit the release with a hammer and now i keep trying to just let the hood fall and latch closed but it wont shut all the way. Can anyone tell me what to do to get my hood closed? (94' jeep cherokee, 4 door)
 
make sure the cable is pushed in all the way, if not then try to push it back at the latch with a screw driver or the like.
 
open hood and close slowly and look at latch you know they are adjustable you look and see where the hood latch and lock meet might need to move one over some not a big deal and like the other guy said might need to look at lock and see if its working could be the cable if its the latch you will see marks on it from where its hitting wrong just move the latch part two bolts
