my ipod touch 4g wont restore?

whenever i try to sync my ipod touch 4g on itunes a error message pops up saying itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod & to go to the summary tab & click restore . So i click restore , it takes 2+ hours to restore and then it says my network has timed out ! ; i realllly dont know what to do anymore PLEASE HELP !
