My iPhone won't connect to iTunes? HELP?!?

When ever i plug my iPhone 4 into my mac, iTunes never recognises it. I've tried multiple cords too.
But when i turn my iPhone off, and then plug it in, iTunes turns it back on then nothing happens
WHY? HELP?!!
