Gnarly Like Whoa

I love my husband to death. But about two months ago, he watched one of those "Meet your meat" videos whereby he witnessed exceptionally cruel (and illegal) treatment of animals. Immediately after, he became a vegan. And not just any vegan, a vegan policeman, and he tries to make everyone feel bad for not being a vegan. It's completely embarrassing.
I am not a vegan. I love a piece of bloody, nasty steak, good hamburgers, fried chicken, et cetera. I love eating meat, I'm a total carnivore.
Anyway, before he became a vegan we frequented a wide range of restaurants, we loved to go out to eat. Now, since only can we not afford to eat at vegan restaurants and buy vegan food (i.e. tofurkey and other expensive vegan shit), he tries to stop the family from eating out at even compromising places like Hometown and Souplantation, where there are good vegan salad bar choices.
What do I do to make him understand that his convictions are respected but we just can't afford to eat at these fancy vegan restaurants? That we need to compromise?
Thanks to some of you. Some of you are able to understand all sides, while others hide behind semantics and oversimplification.
I'll take some of this advice. Appreciate your understanding.
