my hair is currently a browny colour but with alot of orange tints&undertones...

...in it due2colouring HELP? i wanted it to look more summery so i bought an ash blonde dye but it only coloured my roots and even they went a light orange tone not blonde. shall i just get a highlighting kit and keep putting a few highlights in here and there until it is the colour i want? HELP I HATE IT
