he whines for food and to go outside, i understand those... but i think he's whining for attention the other times... i ignore him and he chases his tail. if i tell him go away or ignore him for too long he growls at me. he's great offleash and follows me around like a duckling. this is a very quiet dog and this is really the only thing he doesn't listen to. any ideas? i feel bad banning him to his carrier just so i can get work done. he gets plenty of exercise and attention throughout the day...

So your dog whines and you banish him to another room to be alone? That sounds pretty counter-productive. Ever tried umbilical? Put the leash on him and tie the other end around your waste, so you're always attached to him. Maybe he won't feel so lonely that way and won't whine as much.

Just a suggestion anyways. give it a shot see how it works.

And also, when you say he gets plenty of exercise during the day, does that mean he gets walked, or gets let out to run around on his own? These are very different things in the animal world and there is no substitute for the walk. Honestly, it sounds like he just really needs something to do.

I don't know if he is very young or a rescue, but what you describe sounds like anxiety to me. He's bored, anxious and a little spoiled too.

He does not know how to entertain himself and can't relax.

I don't think he is getting enough exercise. Exercise is both mental and physical. GSD are very smart and if he is mentally bored it will take much more physical activity to relax him.

He needs long leash walks at a heel. He should get some basic training in manners and entertaining himself. Teach him some tricks too. He also needs to be taught patience and be corrected when he whines or chases his tail. Placing him on a sit or down stay while you are loading the washer or something is a mental activity - a job of sorts.

The last resort - another dog. This worked for my dog and it amuses us as well.
