my friend told me her doctor said to gradually reduce smoking, not quit?

why would her doc say that? or is she lying? is it really better to gradually stop(to avoid shockin baby) or cold turkey??
plus shes only 5 weeks, i doubt it would shock it to stop now.. but im not sure. hmm
