My Ford is jumping while driving and?

My Ford expedition is jumping while driving and my check engin light will not come on. Could it be a spark plug or something, or could it be a major problem. It's a 98 ford expedition 4wheel drive with just over 167000 miles. I cant figure out why my car is doing this and that the engin light will not light up. I would think if it were a major problem it would light up. Anyone have an idea?
