I have a 1990 Ford F150 XLT 5.0 V8 with two gas tanks, 4 days ago it broke down. The next day my good friend came to my rescue.
He ran some tests with an electric box and found that the “coil box” that ignites the gasoline was dead. We went to checker auto, bought the $22.00 part and installed it in about an hour! Still no luck...
I had it towed 65 miles to “Sun Devil Auto” a so called reputable auto shop around the corner from my house, They charged me a $39.00 diagnostic fee to find out whats wrong with it.
They then told me the next day that both my fuel pumps (1 per tank) had died and needed to be replaced... they quoted me $640.00 to repair just ONE of them. I told them I could not afford that and that I would pay the diagnostic fee and then tow it home till I could find someone to do it cheaper, the guy then recalculates the numbers and says the lowest he can do it for is $420.00. I then said okay lets do it, before leaving I asked if that came with a guarantee, He said quote “Yes it does, If it doesn't run, you don't pay”.
Today I was supposed to go pick up my truck, the man at the shop called me and said he had finished installing the new fuel pump and I now had fuel pressure but the truck still wont run, he said I also needed a new ignition coil and ignition control module and that my total charge would go from $420.000 to $690.00. Needless to say thats more money than I have.
I feel trapped, all I can afford is the $420.00 originally quoted. I cant pay for the additional crap they are talking about. I find it hard to believe that 5 different parts went belly up at the exact same time. I feel like I'm being screwed and I don't know what to do about it...
Why did they not tell me about these parts after the diagnostic I paid for??
I have not paid them yet nor have I signed anything... I don't know what to do now...
Any advice or input you may have would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!
P.S I inherited the truck from my grandfather after his death in December, the truck has been well cared for and I have no desire to sell or dump it.
