My ford escort xr3i (1990) suspension keeps bottoming out. What can i do?

Its a Ford Escort xr3i like i said (1990 Mark iv). Every time i go over a speed bump quicker than about 20mph it makes a really loud bang. Sounds like the suspension is bottoming out. Any ideas what might be wrong or how to fix it?
 
Options:

1. Slow down - speed humps are SUPPOSED to be a pain ... and they are.
2. Check your already low suspension hasn't been lowered even further
3. replace worn out shocks
4. check the adjustment on adjustable shocks that may have been fitted.
