My Fish keep getting caught in the filter?

How do I get my fish to stay away from the filter intake? They keep getting caught in it and dying, its only a 10-20 gallon filter for a 20 gallon tank.
They are decent fish. They look healthy and have all their colors and fins out. I put an airstone in there to see if that would help keep them away from the filter some too, and so far it is working. I just don't want to lose my Dojo.

Fish should be able to get away from the filters intake, if they are unable to, it usually signifies that they were compromised before hand.
Check your water quality, and see if all your levels are ideal, the fish may be suffering in some way, making them sickly and too weak to avoid the intake.
Meanwhile, using a pair of woman's panty hose, you can tie a bit of it over the intake. It'll prevent particulate from being properly filtered, but it will still filter the water and will slow the intake. This is a temporary fix however, you'll need to find the source of the fishes weakness.
Check the water quality, check the filter cartridge and check your temp as well; any one of these things being off can affect their health.
Best of Luck!
