I had a salt water fishtank in my room with some fish(obviously) and they died after 3 weeks because apparently 10 gallons is not enough water to make a mini sea. So i decided to get a turtle named Shelby instead. Am i dooming Shelby to an early grave?

Another thing to consider besides the hundreds of dollars you will need to spend on suitable housing and husbandry items is the long life of these animals. Turtles can live for decades - are you sure you really want to make such a commitment? I suggest reading multiple guides online as to the requirements for housing turtles. I have provided a couple for you in the sources.

You forgot to mention the species of turtle but I'm guessing it's some type of slider. These turtles grow to be 8-10 inches and need much larger tanks than 10 gallons as they grow. A healthy turtle will need at least a 40 gallon tank by the time it gets around 5-6 inches long. This normally only takes around a year or so but it varies with how much you feed them. If you keep them in tanks that are too small they will not get proper room to grow and it will doom them to a very unhappy life and die early. I'd advise keeping it in at least a 20 gallon then get a 40 gallon when it gets larger.

20 gallon tanks run $20-40 and 40 gallon tanks run $80-120
