I know this isn't a very popular idea on this forum, but I'm in the 848 camp. I have a 1098, and have put a few miles on an 848. I bought my 1098 from a friend who works for Ducati NA. I couldn't pass up the deal, it was cheaper than I could have bought an 848 for. I love my 1098, but I really like the power delivery of the 848. It's a little more civil, but still plenty fast. I haven't compared laptimes, but I'd wager I'm no faster on my 1098 at the track than I would be on an 848. In fact, I'd wager I could ride the 848 faster around the track. The 1098 is fun and has gobs of power. But other than bragging that I have 1098cc's instead of 848cc's, I can't see an advantage.

Well said nitsuj!
so after taking the ducati book to work we came up with this conclusion. Buy the 848 for a deal now and in a year or two if i am not still happy with it trade up to 1198 (or whatever they have out then)or evan a S model. That way being my first ducati i can get use to one that is not as powerful then upgrade later, lets face it us guys will never be happy, always want more power right.

I think you are making a wise decision. You can also change the sprockets on the 848 since it's geared pretty high.
