My ex contacts me at weird times... what is up with that?

my ex-boyfriend cheated on me and dumped me. He was REALLY rude and awful in the end. I vowed to never speak to him again. Then a little over a year later, he started trying to contact me. The first time was on HIS birthday (weird, right?). Now I feel like he tries to contact me everytime something in his life changes (birthday, new apartment or new job, etc). I haven't spoken to him in many years -- as he has yet to say anything real (aka apologize). What is up with him?

He gets nostalgic at important times. It's pretty normal, I guess. Like wow, today is a big day for me. Aw, I wonder how Emma is doing these days...

I do the same kind of thing sometimes. Then afterwards I'm like, whoa, that was stupid, really shouldn't have called her. But a few months later I'll do it again. LOL.
 
I'm not a relationship expert of any kind, but I do get around (hahah). What his problem seems to be is that the woman he left you for wasn't all he had expected. And now he is realizing just how lonely he really is without you in his life. He is in a state of self pity that comes to him in important events that he recalls that you were there for him. For instance, maybe on his birthday (the year before) you made it really special for him and he now realizes he lost the best thing he had in his life. It's nothing you did wrong, so don't fret a bit ( although I imagine you don't). He's just realizing he did the wrong thing and is expecting you to take him back because he thinks you would have also been in denial. Well, he just needs a news flash that he did this all to himself and that you are smarter than he takes you for.
