My dog whines and squeals on lead?

I have a new small xbreed rescue dog. He is totally nuts but friendly likes people and other dogs, gets on well with my labrador . He comes back when called off lead but once on lead he whines and screeches like he was injured at the volume of a jet aircraft!!! (this is not popular with my neighbours). At 8 months i don't think he was ever lead trained. Can anyone suggest a way to stop him?

Rolled up newspaper and smack something- not him, just enough to make a large sound- when he does it. If you need to swat him make it a gentle swat,

everytime he whines and screeches on the lead give it a strong little tug and tell him in a deep voice "no!" And when he is being good praise him "good dog!" Keep doing this and he will start to understand what's appropriate behavior and what's not.

Hitting will make it worse.
Have you checked for injury or some deformity that is hurting him? Like a mole that is being pulled or something hidden by fur.
Try leaving the leash on all the time for a while. Let him drag it around the house and yard. The natural drag will get him used to the extra weight around his neck. Desensitize him a little to the leash as well.
Obedience classes will teach you how to train him without driving you both any more nuts. Petsmart has a good program.
Don't react to the noise. Just behave as if it isn't happening. The bigger deal you make of it, the more he will do it. Even negative attention is attention. Praise him for being quiet. If you cave, it becomes harder the next time to get him to quit.
Be firm
Be patient
Be consistent.
Good Luck, hang in there, he will get it eventually.

Is it possible that the dog was kept chained up at all times? He might have issues with it but make sure he knows that you and the lead are not going to hurt him what so ever and he is going to have to be disaplined not to carry on like that when on the lead my husbands dog is 10 months old and still carries on even though he has always been on the lead from his previous owners.

You don't know what might have happened to this dog before you got him - so you need a lot of patience. Does he whine as soos as you put the lead on him or when you try to walk? Does his collar bother him? If he carries on as soon as the lead is on, try letting him have it on in the house and drag it around to get him used to it if you want to try that.

I think you should take him outside, put the lead on, have treats in your pocket and walk with him. If he whines, stop walking until he's quiet. The split second he's quiet, praise him and give him a treat, start walking. Keep repeating and he'll get the message. You won't need the treats very long, the walking will be his reward.

Just be patient, don't lose your cool and let him know walking is fun and he'll get over this. Be really fast with the treats and praise the split second he quietens. Good luck.
