Step 1
Firstly, dogs pay attention to detail more than we think. Dogs anxiety actually starts when you are getting ready to leave. When most people leave their house there is a routine they follow. This routine may be getting your jacket then your keys then heading to the door. Whatever the routine is, the dog watches this and gets anxious from the beginning.
Step 2
To stop this anxiety, make the routine of leaving become a small ordeal rather than a major life changing event for the dog. Start by doing the first step of your routine over and over again. If the first thing you do is get your coat from the closet, get your coat and then put it away. Do this about 15-20 times or until the dog gets bored with this portion of the routine.
Step 3
Repeat step 2 with every step of your leaving routine. If your next step is getting your keys, repeatedly get your keys until the dog stops paying attention and so on and so forth. Finally you are ready to head out the door.
Step 4
The last step in anyone's routing of leaving the house is going through the door. The dog keys in on this particular movement the most. This is when they 'get left.' To solve this step, complete your entire routine and then slowly go through the door and shut it behind you. Immediately go back inside and greet your dog and give him attention. After about 4 or 5 times of this, stay outside a little longer each time you leave. The dog will become more and more patient with the leaving portion of the routine. Repeat this step about 15-20 times or until your dog no longer barks as the door is closed and you are not with your pet anymore.
Step 5
Every time you return home, greet your dog and let them know you missed them as much as they missed you and enjoy the knowledge that your dog is not terrorizing the neighbors with noise!
