I use the bell method as well :)

I don't know about your system, but I know with mine I wouldn't be able to hear it from the distance you're describing. My dogs whine/bark a lot louder than they ring the bell. If she's whining to get back in I don't see a reason to put another bell outside. It's possible that it could confuse her as well, since ring the bell = go outside to potty.

She's a 3 month old (spayed ;) poodle mix that I have taken in my home, and together she and I use a little bell system that I made where she rings the bells on a string to get into the back yard... She has only been successful at letting me know she wants out to piddle or poo about 4 times (which is very exciting). We've used it a lot more, but with my guidance, or me telling her to ring them and then we go out back, or with treats, but now its all her, and I am so very proud.

In order for us to get to my back yard, we exit out the back door, which takes us to my carport, and just a few steps away there is a gate that leads to the back yard. During playtime in the back or when she needs to go to the bathroom and just get some fresh air, I leave her back there, closing the gate. She's usually never back there unattended for longer than 30 minutes before I let her back in, and then if she wants to go back out she can.

So I was wondering, for the times when I walk back into the house, should I put a bell in the back yard for her to get back INSIDE??? So far when she wants to come back in, she'll whine a little bit, and then well after she has stopped...I go and get her.

Thoughts/ideas/opinions??? Thanks !!
