My Dog eats dirt and then vomits it out?

My dog is a cross breed between a Maltese and a shitzu, he is a male dog and is near the age of 11. ( dogs years 77)

Recently he has been eating dirt and then vomitting it out a few days/hrs afterwards and yes, the vomit is a black substance. We caught him eating dirt a few days ago but he has been vomitting since the start of the year.
he also vomits when we give him human food, thats why we have stopped giving him human food.

What does it mean when he eats dirt?
Why does he vomit it out?
Should i be worried?
help please.
 
Give him a dog food that is high in proteins. THe dog could also be puking to make himself feel better because they also do that with grass because it brng sup all the bad stuff in their immune systems. My dogs do that alot so there are no worries.
