My Dog Chases Cars-Help!?

I live on a private gravel road in a retirement community. My dog is about 2 years old now and has been chasing cars and 4 wheelers. He's pit and Australian Shepherd mixed so I'm sure most of the elderly get terrified when he jumps outta nowhere and starts chasing and barking at them. I've read different articles saying to throw water balloons or put him on a leash and take him to the road and act like you're afraid of the road.. those are so impractical for the area I live in because cars aren't constant and I can't get strangers to throw water balloons to scare him! Anyone else figure out what to do other than calling that scary british woman on TV to fix the problem!!? Lol I'd rather not buy a shock collar either!

I live on a PRIVATE GRAVEL road in the mountains so we let our dogs roam around our property. They come in and out whenever they want and come when told until it comes to cars. I admit I was irresponsable to stop the problem at its early stages and theres no excuse for such behavior but I am trying to fix it now. Thanks again.
 
To reply to answers, you can look under your question, then look under the edit tab and "add details" or email the person directly.

As for your problem unless you can get him to stop, keep him inside at all times and when he goes out have him on a leash.

ADD: what about fencing?
 
shock collar, it'll stop him dead in his/her tracks. worked wonders with my dog and hes 120 lbs
 
i have a pit too and i read somewhere that if you sit outside with them on a leash and just give them treats and distract them and praise them everytime a car comes by they will eventually learn to stop
 
I truly do not understand why you are needing help with this - it is your responsibility to secure your dog, either on leash when you walk with him, or in a securely fenced area.

There is NO reason to ever have your dog running in the road chasing cars. That's so irresponsible it boggles the mind!!
Your dog is a target just waiting to get killed by one of these vehicles. Keep him secure - walk him or keep him in the house if you don't have a fenced yard. What are you thinking of letting him run around like that?

That "scary British woman" does NOT advocate letting your dogs run lose on the road - no one in their right mind would.
