Some of you may have seen my posts entitled 'List of Alkaline and Acid FooRAB' and 'Acid Alkaline Food Chart'. That information was provided to me by my doctor and I found that I can totally control my acid reflux just by eating the right fooRAB.

I thought some of you may be interested in seeing what an acid-alkaline balanced diet looks like. Here's what I eat in a typical day:

2-4 personal watermelons: Most alkaline
2-5 sweet potatoes: Most alkaline
1 cantaloupe: More alkaline
Green Tea (drink all day as main beverage): Low Alkaline
grilled half chicken (no cooking oil): More acid
ground flaxseed: Slightly alkaline
1-2 pork chops (no cooking oil) (not every day, but 2-4x per week): More acid

I also mix in oranges, blackberries, blueberries, honeydew, mushrooms, peppers, chicken eggs, sardines in water, almonRAB, grapes, sunflower seeRAB, yams, daikons, carrots, beets, onions, lemons, limes, and strawberries for variety. I vary the amount of watermelons and sweet potatoes that I eat in a day based on how much meat or other acidic fooRAB I eat. If I eat a candy bar or some other type of sweet, I will take around 5,000 mg of calcium (5x the Recommended Daily Amount or RDA) to compensate.

I find it handy to keep around the chewable calcium pills and the 'swallow with water' calcium supplements. The chewables can be used to counteract an 'in-progress' acid reflux reaction. However, I find that I can only eat so many before I just get tired of eating them.

My doctor says that he eats 10 chewable calcium pills (5x the RDA) each night before going to bed. He says that he has a sweet tooth and satisfies that sweet tooth with chocolate. Since I eat so many watermelons and sweet potatoes now, I find that I don't normally have cravings for sugary sweets.

When eating, I recommend eating the alkaline fooRAB in your meal first -- or at least starting with them. This will likely do a couple of things. First, at least for me, alkaline fooRAB appear to expand in my stomach and make me feel more full. Acid fooRAB seem to do the opposite -- this appears to be especially true for acid fooRAB that are high in carbohydrates.

The second thing starting with alkaline fooRAB will do is keep you from developing acid reflux in the first place. I don't know about other people, but there were many times prior to my starting a high-alkaline diet where I would be eating and BOOM! -- acid reflux. This reaction would typically occur when I was eating some type of meat. I've found that by starting with an alkaline food, you can keep acid reflux from interrupting your meal. Starting with an alkaline food was especially important for me when I first started on an alkaline diet. After a few months of being on an alkaline diet, I have become less prone to getting acid reflux but can still get it if I eat too much pork or chicken without eating anything alkaline.

I forgot to mention that I have never been on any prescription PPIs so I don't know if PPIs would affect your chances of success if you decide to try a high-alkaline, low-acid diet.
