I'm From California, I was in Laughlin, which is near Searchlight where the tea party took place. I was helping my sister move back to California. We had to drive to Searchlight because her friend was gonna let us borrow a Uhaul looking trailer. Anyway so we were at her friends house and right across the street, to my surprise; the tea party was taking place. So I was like, what the heck; lets go see what the big deal is. So me and my brother are walking up to the crowd and they started looking at us all funny, very mindful, almost as if ''oh these guys are gonna start some schit''. I started to think ''darn, is it me or is everyone looking at us? do we stick out like a sore thumb?'' I wondered if it didn't help that my mom is Mexican and my dad is White. I hate to say it, but I didnt feel welcomed, one lady came up to us and said ''Excuse me, are you lost?'' One drunken man wearing a confederate flag t-shirt started yelling ''NO VACANCY - NO VACANCY'' while looking directly at us. We decided then and there to stop our advance at getting a little deeper into the crowd, I mean if this is how it was on the outskirts of the crowd, imagine how it be on the inside. Not everyone was mean, we met some nice people there too and to my surprise, I did see some color. We started talking to a guy from Cambodia, I asked him; ''So, Why are you here?'' and he said in a thick accent ''Because I'm an American now''. I guess attending Tea Party's proves your 100% American. We were having a nice good chat when another guy joined in, he was from Guatemala. He seemed very confused, he said he was there to Protest why he didn't have health care, since he works all day as a mechanic, his company obviously didn't have a plan to offer him and he couldn't afford the current prices. I started thinking, this is a perfect candidate of a hard working honest citizen who might have a darn good chance at health care in the near future. I was expecting to see a lot of successful, financially secure, middle class people. To my surprise; I didn't. I met a nice lady, Margery in her early 50's, she was on disability and in her words she was there to protest ''big government''. I met Larry, he lost his job back in Arizona after the state wide school cuts, he was a night janitor at a middle school. He was there to protest ''school funding''. We had to leave soon after, the guy wearing the confederate flag came around with a group of his friends, and I think they over-heard me trying to speak spanish (I'm horrible at speaking spanish) to the dude from Guatemala. He said ''What are you guys talking to him about? Dont you know English is the official language of the Tea Party?'' I felt like he was trying to shield the Cambodian and Guatemalan dude's it felt like he was saying ''Leave em Alone''. I thought he and his friends we're getting ready to jump my brother and I, so we left.
I guess some might say ''I went looking for it'', nevertheless, this was my day at the tea party, has anyone else experienced something similar?
