My dad (65) had a prostate laser operation 2 months back and was in hospital for a week for that. He developed a stomach problem ever since then. Not sure whether it is related to that operation but he never had that problem before that. the way he describes his pain , itall looks like Ulcer kind of problem (he feels heart burn , some time respiratory problem , huge appetite , and unbearable bad feeling in the stomach , he says it really not pain but not bearable) . he is suffering so much that he says he feels like committing suicide. We have visited several doctors and have done endoscopy too but the doctor says it is really not ulcer but stomach has taken some beating because of all the medicine he has taken. Doctors have given tablets like omeparazole, amoxicillin but still no progress. If any one has gone through this kind of problem it will be really helpful if you can share some information. I can

gurukc,

What types of medication is your father now taking? The omeparazole is the generic form of Prilosec which is suppose to help neutralize the acid. Has your father discussed with the physician who gave him his medications after his surgery that he is not tolerating the medication and what alternative medication can he be prescribed.

It may also be that the omeparazole has not had a chance to take effect as of yet. I have recently been placed on omeparazole and I was instructed to take one before breakfast. When I went the the gastroenterologist, they instructed me to begin taking one before breakfast and one before dinner. You also need to wait at least a half hour after taking the medication before you can eat.

If your father likes to drink milk (I can only drink it with chocolate added), then maybe he can try taking his medication (not the omeparazole, that needs to be taken with water) with milk. The milk will help coat his stomach, which may be what he needs to help prevent the medication from tearing up the stomach lining.

Your father may also have to begin keeping a journal on what foods bring on his symptoms and see if avoiding these foods for now will help with his discomfort.
I hope he is feeling better soon--if not go right back to those doctors and make them listen.

We visited another doctor and after looking at the endoscopy report he is of the opinion that medicine given my other doctor are of high dosage and that has made all this stomoch problem even worse. According to him , the report is very normal (minor scratches) and he prescribed pantaperozole for 2 weeks. He menationed that my dad should wait till the old medicene effects vanishes , till then he has to live with the problem. Hope he is right and if so the pain should go in a week or so.

My mom had a problem with her stomach/bowel that caused her unbearable pain and uncontrollable bowel movements that left her housebound and wearing diapers. She told me she was going to commit suicide, so I convinced her to give the doctors one more chance. She had C-Diff, which is a bacterial infection. I can't say if this is what is causing your dad's problem but if they haven't checked for bacterial infection perhaps you could ask for it. FYI- my mom is ok now.
