And find out what's inside?
My Dad and I were just watching the local news, and the last story was about NASA sending these two probes/satellites to the Moon, to find out what's inside the Moon, what it's made of, and how it got there.
At which point my dad said, 'I hate that. What a waste of taxpayer money.'
I said it was for Science, but he then asked, 'So? What possible benefit is there to knowing what's inside the Moon?'
All I could say was, '...But it's for Science...'
While I think NASA and stuff is cool, my dad thinks that if there isn't a real and direct benefit to American citizens, the gov't should not be using taxpayer dollars to fund it. Heck, when there's a natural disaster, he thinks the STATES should be paying for it, not the National Govt. He's pretty consistent, actually- he's a farmer, and he really, really, really thinks they need to get rid of farm subsidies; most Conservative farmers around here would 'dis'agree with him on that 'one' point...
So, is my dad basically right? That the only reason NASA is spending all this money is to satisfy their curiosity?
EDIT- Don't worry, my dad is 'also' upset about the money spent in Iraq. Heck, he wishes Afghanistan (which he feels was necessary) could be done cheaper.
